On the Yarn Trail: Yarnia

Like many fiber fanatics, I am always on the lookout for a great new local yarn shop. Not too long ago, I was leaving an appointment and stumbled across a small shop in Montclair, New Jersey named Yarnia. They were closed at the time, but I made a mental note to come back at another time. I’m glad I did!

Yarnia is an adorable little shop that offers something for everyone. They go far beyond accommodating knitters and offer felting kits, a wide variety of spindles, and they featured a Schacht Sidekick folding spinning wheel in the window. The walls are stacked floor to ceiling with fibery goodness! Many of their samples were actually crochet! As someone who does not really knit, this was a welcome change.

I had the chance to meet Kathleen, one of the owners. She was quite pleasant and was helping a customer with her project. She was very patient as she walked through the issue her customer was experiencing. Even though she was helping a customer, she checked with me several times to see if I needed any help or if she could answer any questions. When I commented on how many samples were crocheted, she told me her daughter crochets and made many of the samples. I will say when I’ve been in other shops and mentioned I am a crocheter, I’ve been given what I call “nose up face;” meaning they have no interest in crochet. This was far from the case at Yarnia.

I picked up a hank of Noro and a Yarnia pin for my project bag. They offer a wide variety of classes for knitters and crocheters, as well as plenty of sit and stitch times. I certainly look forward to visiting again!
